Visit the cultural capital of Savoy, Chambéry
Our campsite is located in the middle of nature, we are surrounded by the Alps and of course we have the lake nearby. But there are also beautiful towns with historic centres, many shops, boutiques and a choice of restaurants. Chambéry is one of these towns, which is definitely worth a visit.
As the capital of the former Duchy of Savoy, Chambéry has much to offer, especially in terms of culture. And it does so with total conviction. Thanks to its rich history, it is a popular destination among visitors. There is so much to see and so much to do, both culturally and culinary. But you can also go shopping there. With its medieval centre, museums, numerous events and places of entertainment, this town, with its 11th century castle, is still one of the most important in the region. And all this just over 20 kilometres from the campsite.
If you like history, then this town is really for you. Chambéry has long been the capital of the Dukes of Savoy. And this is noticeable in the architecture. Of course, the castle is one of the places not to be missed. And at the foot of it is the old town centre, a maze of narrow streets where you can walk. There you will find Renaissance mansions, facades with optical effects, hidden courtyards and the great cathedral St. François de Sales. The Elephant Fountain is a must see and if you like technology, the SNCF rotunda is a must see. The Museum of Fine Arts contains an important collection of Italian paintings and the Villa Savoy Museum houses archaeological finds from the region.
Whether you are a fashion lover or just want to spend some time shopping, this city has something for everyone. Perfumeries, clothing stores or mouth-watering shops, you will find it all here. In the old town centre there are many shops and specialty stores and just outside the centre there is a large shopping mall with everything you need. And in this "city of antiques" you can't miss the big monthly flea market either.
A gastronomic discovery of the Savoyard Terroir.
After a full day of outings, it's a good idea to take a seat on the Place Saint-Léger and taste the many local dishes. The region is famous for its liqueurs, syrups and cheeses. But of course also for the good wines, which are served in the many restaurants in the town.
The Lac du Bourget.
With the Hautecombe monastery on one of its banks, the superb Lac du Bourget is highly recommended. Located only 10 minutes from the city, this lake is the ideal place for water lovers and nature lovers. In this largest natural lake in France, you can swim and practice various water sports. Stroll along the shoreline or enjoy a picnic in the sunshine and take advantage of the surroundings and the impressive panoramic views of the Bauges mountains and the Savoyard foreland.
Other towns in the vicinity.
In Savoie, other towns are worth a visit. Visit "La perle des Alpes", Annecy, the largest city in the area. The centre has a special architecture and there are idyllic streets in which you can walk. And of course the lake of Annecy. In 1992 Albertville organized the Winter Olympics and that left its mark. In this industrial city you walk between the modern buildings and you meet many trendy terraces and restaurants. Above, in Conflans discover this historic centre, a medieval stronghold. If you are looking for something different and need a relaxing day out, go to Aix Les Bains. This spa, with its natural hot springs, is located on the eastern shore of Lac du Bourget and is one of the largest spas in France.
